Repair or replace your gutters? How to tell

Most gutter faults can be repaired. Replacement is only worth paying for when the gutter itself has reached the end of its life.

Faults that are usually a repair

  • A drip at one joint: new seal or union
  • A sagging run: new brackets and the fall reset
  • One cracked length: that length replaced
  • A loose downpipe: new clips
  • A leaking stop end or corner piece

Signs it is time to replace

  • Leaks at several joints along the same run
  • uPVC that has gone brittle and cracks when it is handled
  • Lengths that have warped or twisted in the sun
  • Gutter that is too small for the roof and overflows even when clean
  • Old cast iron or asbestos cement that has rusted through or split

Check the fascia first

Gutters are fixed to the fascia board. If the board behind is rotten, new brackets will not hold and a repair will not last. A proper inspection looks at the board as well as the gutter.

Mixing old and new

Gutter profiles differ between makes and change over the years. A new length does not always marry up with twenty-year-old gutter, and a forced joint will leak. Sometimes replacing one full run is the tidier and longer-lasting fix.

Our approach

We repair wherever a repair will last, and we only suggest replacement when it will not. Either way you get photos of the fault and a fixed price before anything is done.
