What the marks are
Green is algae, which grows wherever uPVC stays damp and shaded. Black spots are mould. The grey film is traffic dirt and soot that sticks to the surface.
Why it is worth cleaning
Clean roofline lifts the look of the whole house. It also lets you see the condition of the boards and joints, which are hard to judge under a layer of grime.
How it is done
Fascias, soffits and the outside of the gutters are washed with a soft brush and plenty of water, working along each run. Stubborn algae is treated first with a cleaner made for uPVC.
What to avoid
- Abrasive pads and cream cleaners, which scratch the surface and make it hold dirt
- Solvents and bleach-heavy products, which can discolour uPVC
- A pressure washer aimed upwards, which forces water into the roof space
How often
Every one to two years suits most homes. North-facing walls and houses near trees or busy roads need it more often. It makes sense to have it done on the same visit as the gutter clean.
