Gutter vacuum or ladder: which is better?

Both methods get gutters clean. The right one depends on the house and on what is in the gutter.

How a gutter vacuum works

A powerful wet vacuum sits on the ground. Lightweight poles carry a curved nozzle up to the gutter, and the operator clears it from below.

Where a vacuum is the better choice

  • Gutters above conservatories, extensions and garages
  • Three-storey houses and other high gutters
  • Soft ground, sloping drives and anywhere a ladder cannot stand safely
  • Gutters full of loose leaves, moss and silt

Where a ladder still wins

  • Compacted debris with plants rooted in it
  • Checking and resealing a leaking joint
  • Refitting a loose bracket or a dropped length
  • Clearing a blockage right at the outlet

What about safety?

Working from the ground removes most of the risk of a fall, which is why a vacuum is the first choice wherever it will do the job properly. When a ladder is needed, it should be footed, tied or stabilised, never just leaned on the gutter itself.

What we do

We carry both. Most gutters are cleared by vacuum from the ground, and we go up a ladder where hands are needed. Either way you get photos of the finished gutter.
