Choosing a gutter cleaning company

Gutter cleaning is easy to do badly, and you cannot see the result from the ground. These checks help you pick someone who does it properly.

Insurance

Ask whether they hold public liability insurance. Work at height around glass roofs and parked cars is exactly where accidents happen.

A fixed price in writing

A proper quote names the price, what it covers and what happens if they find a fault. Avoid anyone who will only give a price once they are up the ladder.

Proof of the work

Before and after photos are the only way to know every gutter was cleared. Any decent firm offers them without being asked.

The right equipment

Look for a gutter vacuum for high and awkward gutters, and ladders that are stabilised and footed. Nobody should be walking on your conservatory roof.

Downpipes and waste

The job should include checking the downpipes run and taking the debris away, not leaving it in a heap on the path.

A local address and number

A firm with a local base and a landline is easier to hold to its word than a mobile number on a leaflet.

Red flags

  • Cold callers who say they noticed a problem while passing
  • Faults found on the roof that you are not shown in photos
  • Pressure to decide on the spot
  • Cash only and no paperwork
